Established since 2011

Leatherworking is in my blood. My great great grandfather was a saddler and although it skipped a few generations, the crafstman gene found me and since 2011 I’ve been creating amazing things using leather.

I’ve always been artistic and it all started with being obsessed with drawing cartoon characters back when I was a young kid. I rebelled against all the advice of my teachers at school and was the first in my family to go to art school and follow my dream.

Straight out of college I started my own graphic design business and worked in the print industry for 10 years. I’d been interested in photography from the age of 11 when I got my first SLR film camera for christmas so it was a natural progression for me to move the business in the direction of photography services. The design side was ticking over so I opened a photographic studio and before long that was my full time business.

Being the sort of obsessively creative person who likes to try EVERYTHING, one day I got the urge to make a leather bound book so I began researching the best techniques and challenged myself to make one. I shared photos of that book on social media and instantly received two orders. The lightbulb clicked on in my head that maybe, just maybe I could make a living from this craft. Within a few weeks I had a long list of orders and Black Orchard Books was born. I was so busy that the photography and design businesses took a backseat while I followed my new passion. It wasn’t long before requests started coming in for different things made from leather like journals, belts, cases and bags so I read as many books as I could find and learned how to hand stitch, tool, dye and mould leather.

In 2011, Black Orchard Leather was officially born and I’ve been making weird and wonderful leather creations for 1000s of customers ever since!
